Every now and then when I have some free time, I like to watch Gruen Planet on the ABC channel. Gruen Planet is a TV program about advertising and public relations and has Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft as regular panellists. Sampson is the serious looking one who is CEO of Leo Burnett, which was named Agency of the Year several times. He is also the co-creator of Earth Hour and an avid mountain climber who has ascended to the top of Mount Everest unguided. Howcroft is the CEO of Young & Rubicam Brands and former chairman of the Advertising Federation of Australia. He is also a founding board member of Media Team which assists non-profit organisations with their marketing and media efforts, a commentator on ABC 774 and a board member of the Melbourne Football Club. Such impressive resumes; it’s no wonder these two men bring a wealth of knowledge to the program in the fields of advertising and public relations. So where can the rest of us start to accumulate such knowledge? A good starting point is to do a marketing diploma course.
There are several training centres that offer business administration diploma courses online. Through these government funded courses, students will obtain qualifications that are recognised throughout Australia and learn how to identify marketing opportunities, implement marketing activities and plan market research. Being able to do the marketing diploma course online is ideal for people who need the flexibility to fit studies around their work and family commitments. It is especially beneficial for stay-at—home mothers like me who can only study or work when the children are at school or at night when the children have gone to bed. Studying online doesn’t mean that I am left to my own devices. Far from it, because every student is assigned a mentor and is expected to participate in webinars and virtual classes. A marketing diploma course usually takes around 6-9 months (i.e. approximately 2 semesters) to complete and is VET FEE-HELP approved, which means that eligible students can receive a loan from the government to pay part or all of their course fees. The regular course fee is approximately $9600.
A marketing diploma course is a stepping stone for anyone who is considering a career in marketing. The course can open doors to leadership roles like marketing coordinator, public relations coordinator, product manager, sales manager, etc. because it also teaches managerial skills, decision making skills, problem solving skills and research techniques. When you think about how much money is spent on establishing and maintaining an organisation, clever marketing can be a very useful tool that should not be overlooked. Maybe we all can’t be as successful as Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft from Gruen Planet, but we can start somewhere. A combination of creativity and the skills learnt from a marketing diploma courses online is a good way to get your foot in the door.
